Residency or registration not required, open 7 days a week, 16 and older

"If you're visually impaired, if you're deaf, if you're in a wheelchair, if you're without transportation, we'll get you here," Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb said at Tuesday's kickoff of the mass COVID-19 vaccine site at Roosevelt High School in Gary.

Gov. Holcomb called the site a demonstration of how the State of Indiana along with FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) are efficiently and effectively eliminating nearly every excuse for not taking the shot.

Add to that, if you are not an Indiana resident and can get here, you're eligible to receive the free vaccine. The transportation piece is available only to Indiana residents near the site.

Indiana has a program to deliver the vaccines to those who are homebound and unable to travel.

Anyone 16 and older can get the vaccine at Roosevelt, but there are conditions for those ages 16-17. Sixteen to 17 year-olds can only receive the 2-dose Pfizer vaccine and must have a parent's consent.

Open daily for 8 weeks, April 7 through June 2, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., the site offers drive-thru lanes and walk-in stations for those on foot. Signage around the school at 730 W. 25th Avenue (25th & Harrison Street) directs drive-thru traffic to the building's rear parking areas.

Walk-in stations will be accessible to those using public transportation and are located in the school's front parking area along 25th Avenue.

First doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be offered during the first three weeks of operation.

Those vaccinated during that time frame will be guaranteed a second dose during the fourth, fifth, and sixth weeks of the clinic. The single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine will be administered the final two weeks of the operation.

The Roosevelt site can deliver up to 2,000 vaccines a day. Another 1,000 daily vaccines are being allocated to mobile units for the surrounding area.

Preregistration is urged but not required. To register for the vaccine at Roosevelt, visit the website ourshot.in.gov. You will be required to enter a date of birth. Next, insert the Roosevelt zip code 46407 and select an appointment time.

Registrations can be made by phone by dialing 211. Those who are homebound or need travel assistance should call 211.
