Driver called police for help, saying he had been shot

Indiana State Police today arrested Shaughn S. Nelson, a Gary man, in connection with the homicide of a driver two weeks ago on I/80-94.

Nelson, age 28, is charged with Murder, a Level 1 Felony.

Sgt. Glen Fifield, Lowell District #13 Public Information Officer said detectives spent hours reviewing evidence gathered from the crime scene and the vehicles involved which lead them to Mr. Nelson. He is currently being held at the Lake County Jail without bond. “This was a targeted victim and not a random shooting,” he said.

On September 20 at 11:30pm, state police responded to a call from a driver, saying he had been shot.

When ISP troopers arrived at the scene, near Ripley and Interstate 80-94, they located a black 2004 Lincoln parked against the shoulder. The male driver was bleeding and was initially responsive with the officers.

Troopers began to administer first aid to the driver which then turned into the officers performing C.P.R. until medics arrived.

The driver was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Hobart where he was later pronounced deceased. The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle.

Fifield said the investigation is ongoing. The Indiana State Police are asking if anyone has any information on this shooting, to please contact Det. McCall at (219) 696-6242.
