Parking bans along snow routes will be enforced
The National Weather Service is predicting a heavy snow fall beginning 6 p.m. Thursday, February 8th until approximately 6 p.m. on Friday, February 9th.
The forecast has triggered an alert from the Gary Police Department, reminding residents that parking is not allowed on designated snow routes when the snowfall reaches 2 inches or more. Vehicles parked along the snow routes will be towed.
Residents in the Horace Mann area who live along 5th Avenue, a snow route, can park in the Horace Mann High School parking lot and the Methodist Hospitals parking lot.
In the Glen Park area, residents living along the Broadway corridor near Indiana University Northwest can park in the IUN parking lot.
The city administration has recommended residents:
Have a contingency plan in place for children if school is cancelled or children are released early
Never use the oven to heat the house
Check the dryer hose and exhaust port for build up lint
Leave a faucet drip when temperatures/real feel is below zero to avoid freezing pipes
Keep a shovel accessible
Do not attempt to shovel large amounts of snow at one time
Salt sidewalks and stairs before the snow begins
Have 1-2 days of non perishable food on hand in case of power outages
Dress in layers if you must go out in the elements
Avoid extended exposure to the elements
Check on elderly and home bound neighbors
Do not run gas powered generators indoors
If you become stuck in the snow while driving, remain in the vehicle, turn on your hazard lights and call for assistance
Report power outages directly to NIPSCO
When using space heaters, make sure they are on a level surface with no debris around them
Report roads in need of clearing to 311 either on the 311App or by calling 219-881-1311
Should you be in need of emergency shelter go to the nearest fire station or the public safety facility for assistance. If you are unable to make it to one of these locations call 911 for assistance.
