McCullough's girls get the royal treatment at end of year appreciation program

What was it like to be treated like a queen for a day? About 70 students received the royal treatment last Monday when an exercise team, facial and nail artists, and nutritionists were among the volunteers who set up shop in the gym at Frankie Woods-McCullough Academy for Girls in Gary.

Spa day for McCullough students in grades 5-8 closed out the year for the Gary Literacy Coalition’s “Learning Partner” mentoring project with the school. It was a day to show appreciation to the girls who have participated in the project since the start of the school year in August 2017.

Mentors, called learning partners, were matched with each 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade student. They visited their mentees during the school day at least twice per month, encouraging excellence in academics and behavior. Mentors and mentees read selected books and participated in group book discussions each month. Speakers from the community were invited to provide additional support to students and teachers.

The beauty zones have always been popular attractions for the girls with more nail artists added this year, said GLC executive director Era Twyman.

New this year was Iva Gillespie’s gift card designs, and nutrition and health information from Purdue Cooperative Extension.

Twyman said a session giving sewing tips has proven to be another popular attraction.

The girls took lessons from the fitness squad in the hall outside the gym.

GLC has been a community partner at the school since 2005, when the Gary school district began gender academies for boys at Dr. Bernard Watson elementary school and for girls at McCullough. Then, both schools drew students from nearby low-income neighborhoods. Today, McCullough is a choice school accepting girls across the district.

The literacy coalition focuses on improving literacy for all ages and creating awareness of the importance of literacy to health, economic development, and family well-being.
