Shot by Gary Police officer during pursuit

According to authorities, a teen shot by a Gary Police officer pursuing suspects in the armed robbery of the Munster Verizon Wireless store has died.

Kemonte Cobbs, 15, of Gary, was pronounced dead at 3:49 p.m. Wednesday at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Mark Back, spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Office, confirmed Cobbs was one of five suspected in the armed robbery Tuesday evening at the Verizon retailer at Ridge Road and Calumet Avenue in Munster.

The robbery occurred around 5:48 p.m. Tuesday, August 1 with the suspects pursued by Griffith, Highland, Munster, Lake County Sheriff's Department helicopter, and Indiana State Police.

The suspects' vehicle ran off the roadway in the area of 19th Avenue and Hanley Street in Gary. All five suspects ran from the scene.

Three of the five suspects were apprehended, one remains at large. Cobb was hospitalized, after being shot by the Gary officer.

Two of those charged, Deshalone Damien Davis and Vondell Henry Jr., both 20 and Gary residents, have each been charged with robbery under the federal Hobbs Act and with brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, court records show.

A 17-year-old, whose name is being withheld because of his juvenile status, has also been charged in the case, FBI Special Agent Bob Ramsey said.

The FBI has taken over the case, which had previously been under the Munster Police Department’s jurisdiction. Investigators are looking into whether the five are connected to a string of other cell phone store robberies.
