Will offer basketball, volleyball courts and indoor soccer fields

The City of Hammond held a groundbreaking ceremony for the $17 million Hammond Sportsplex and Community Center Friday at the site of the former Woodmar Mall, 6630 Indianapolis Boulevard.

The new 135,000-sft complex will offer six basketball courts, 12 volleyball courts, two regulation-sized indoor soccer fields, six indoor batting cages and an upper level track that could be used for running and walking as well as for observation of sporting events taking place on the lower level. The facility also will offer a community room to host city events, a concession area, general offices, and restrooms/changing rooms.

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr., is enthusiastic about the sportplex’s potential. “Typically our kids would have to travel outside of the area for basketball, volleyball and soccer tournaments,” stated Mayor McDermott. “This state of the art facility will allow us to have these tournaments in Hammond, bringing in visitors who will be patronizing restaurants, hotels and other businesses in our City which could potentially bring in new economic development.”

Madison Construction Co., of Orland Park, Illinois, is the construction manager for the project. American Structurepoint is the architect of record and is also responsible for the project’s interior design, structural engineering, and civil engineering services. IMEG Engineering of Rock Island, Illinois, will perform the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering services.
