ECIER Foundation: We’re about the solutions, not the problems
The ECIER (pronounced e-cere) Foundation added a big feather to its cap when the City of Gary announced it had chosen the non-profit as its partner in the city’s new college scholarship program.
Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson called it a ‘big deal’ for the city. “We will contribute $100,000 this year and $50,000 in years hereafter to the Gary Scholars Program. One of the best aspects is we are promoting students who want to pursue careers in public service.”
Starting this year, the scholarships will be available to Gary’s high school seniors who have been accepted in a 2-year or 4-year college or technical degree program.
“People always complain and talk about the problems of kids. It’s not about the problems, it’s about the solutions. We want to make a difference and help our youth,” said Chareice White, founder and board chair of ECIER.
Gary’s contribution came from Majestic Star Casinos and ECIER will help the city administer the scholarship distributions.
ECIER and Diana Sandlin, from the city’s side, will be meeting with high school principals and counselors to identify graduating seniors and screen applicants. Scholarships will be awarded in June.
Sandlin said scholars in the program will be offered internships and volunteer opportunities on city projects.
ECIER (Educate Communicate Innovate Entrepreneur Relationships) was founded by White 4 years ago. Its program for high school students encourages youth to become leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and community volunteers. At monthly workshops, students are introduced to leaders in the business, civic, and community service sectors.
Following the announcement, Mayor Freeman-Wilson hosted a workshop for students in the ECIER program.
ECIER just finished a successful fundraising effort for a premiere showing of the film, “Black Panther” at the AMC Theater in Merrillville. White said the next fundraiser will be the June film premiere of “Uncle Drew,” a basketball comedy starring Kyrie Irving, Shaquille O'Neal, and Tiffany Haddish.
