Yanes told police 'someone was following him and told him to do it'
The Lake County Sheriff’s Dept. deployed a helicopter and all-terrain vehicles to capture Dimas Gabriel Yanes, now facing 5 felony counts for stabbing a 13 year-old girl during a softball game in Lowell.
The girl was attending a game with her mother at the Lowell Bluebirds Softball Field on August 31st.
According to the charging document, “An unknown man approached and hovered over the girl while holding a large knife. He tried to stab her in the chest, but the victim blocked the knife with her hand.”
The girl said the man went towards her mother, but then ran away.
A witness saw the man approach the bleachers. He next heard screams when the child fell into the bleachers and he saw the man run away into the woods with a knife in his hand.
The witness said the umbrella the girl was holding probably helped prevent the knife from hitting her. The girl was taken to the hospital with lacerations to her fingers and hands.
Tips from the public led county police to Yanes’ location the next day.
“Those solid leads allowed us to use our helicopter, ATVs and other tools to effectively track the suspect as he fled through cornfields, wooded areas and harsh terrain,” said Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez.
Yanes told police, “Someone was following him and telling him to do it.”
Sheriff Martinez said Yanes was deported to Honduras in 2018 and reentered the United States illegally.
“He committed crimes in at least 5 states - Nassau County, New York, Madison County, Illinois, Cobb County, Georgia, Williams County, Ohio and Lake County, Indiana. His criminal history includes battery, trespassing, intoxication, attempted burglary and now attempted murder,” Sheriff Martinez said.
