Ending his first month on the job, Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez is reorganizing leadership at the Lake County Jail. Martinez was chosen by county Democrats after former Sheriff John Buncich’s conviction on federal corruption charges in September.

In a statement from Sheriff Martinez, the department “will search nationwide for a Qualified Professional Corrections Administrator to serve as Warden of the Lake County Jail.”

Martinez named Assistant Warden Jose Menchaca to replace Edward Davies, the current jail warden.

According to Martinez, “Davies appointment and continued employment as Warden of the Lake County Jail by ex-sheriff John Buncich resulted in Lake County being in noncompliance with the Professional Corrections Administer terms of the U.S. Dept. of Justice Settlement Agreement.”

Assistant Warden Menchaca will handle day-to-day jail operations along with DOJ Compliance Coordinator Mark Purevich, Deputy Warden Kimberly Cox, Deputy Warden Kimberly O’Conner, and Deputy Warden Darryl Veenstra

To satisfy the settlement agreement between the USDOJ and Lake County, Sheriff Martinez said the Jail Warden must meet requirements mandated by the USDOJ.
