Infant and 19-year-old shot in Gary

Police report both in serious condition

Lt. Dawn Westerfield, Gary Police Dept. Public Information Officer reported Gary Officers were dispatched to the 800 block of west 25th Avenue in regard to shots fired on August 2, 2021 approximately 1:04pm.

Upon arrival officers were met by a female holding a 1-year-old male child who had been struck by gunfire. An officer immediately took mother and child towards the hospital until they were intercepted by an ambulance and care was transferred over.

A 19-year-old male was also struck by gunfire and taken to the hospital by private car.

Witnesses say the 19-year-old was supervising three small children (including the 1-year-old) while they were playing in the yard of the residence. Shots were fired by suspect(s) unknown, and the 19-year-old and 1-year-old were struck by gunfire.

Lt. Westerfield said both victims are in serious condition.
