Giving time and resources to uplift their neighbors

Community and business leaders joined a dozen community groups and throngs of volunteers in giving away 500 turkeys Saturday, November 20 in the first annual ThanksGIVEing Turkey Giveaway at Indiana University-Northwest, one of the event’s partners.

Led by Gary’s Guaranteed Income Validation Effort, or GIVE, the giveaway was another step in a campaign to make life better for Gary residents, said GIVE Executive Director Prophetess Burgess Peoples.

“It’s just so exciting to see so many people give their hearts, their time and other resources to uplift their neighbors as we go into the holiday season,” she said. “God has blessed many of us with the ability to help others, and that’s what we did.”

Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince said the GIVE program, which he launched in February, has improved the lives of the 120 families who have received $500 a month, no strings attached. No tax dollars are used in the program. The turkey giveaway is a way to uplift families and thank the community, he said.

“My family and I have many reasons to be thankful,” Mayor Prince said. “Giving back to the community is the right thing to do.”

Along with the GIVE pilot program, the City of Gary and IUN, the turkey giveaway sponsors were:
• The NAACP Gary Chapter
• The Urban League of Northwest Indiana
• Israel Metropolitan CME Church
• The Minority Contractors Collaboration
• NCNW (National Council of Negro Women)
• Ladies N Charge
• The Mustard Seed Center Programs
• American Complete Auto Repair
• D&K Salads
• Teachers Credit Union
• Centier Bank
• Notre Dame Federal Credit Union
