A story from the 1960 civil rights struggle, "The Watsons Go To Birmingham 1963"

Ten-year-old Kenny chronicles the events of a fateful summer for the Watson family of Flint, Michigan, in this hilarious and deeply moving story “The Watsons Go to Birmingham 1963.” There's Momma, Dad, little sister Joetta and teenage brother Byron, who can't seem to stay out of trouble.

Concerned about this budding juvenile delinquent in their family, Momma and Dad decide it's time for Byron to have a lengthy stay with strict Grandma Sands in Birmingham, Alabama. The family piles into the Brown Bomber and heads south toward a horrific moment in American history: The bombing of the Sixteenth Avenue Baptist Church.

Directed by Mark Spencer, the starring cast are Jarius Taylor-Newman of Clifford Pierce Middle School, D’Arnez Gaston of West Side Leadership Academy, Judah Coleman of Charter School of the Dunes, Jasanth Coleman of Charter School of the Dunes, Dwayne Coleman Jr. of Thea Bowman High School, Tyonne LaShea Green of Indiana University Northwest, Ryan Robinson of Indiana University Northwest, Nina Turner, and Jim Stewart.

Performance schedule is February 28, March 1, 2, 3, 4 at 7 p.m. and March 5 at 2 p.m. in the 125-seat theatre at West Side, 900 Gerry St., Gary. Patrons should use Door E.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door and can be reserved by calling 219 390-WSTG (9784).
