First and third Thursdays throughout the summer

Edgewater Health will once again be hosting a Farmers’ Market this summer to increase access to healthier food options and improve the health of Gary and surrounding communities.

Edgewater Health will partner with Lake County Eats Local (LCEL) every first and third Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June to September to hold a Farmers’ Market in its headquarters’ parking lot, 1100 W. 6th Avenue. LCEL’s goal is to address high rates of food insecurity and limited fresh food access in the cities of East Chicago and Gary while supporting local farm viability.

“For some time, Gary has been considered a food desert. Access to fresh produce in many areas throughout the community is a concern,” said LaTanya Woodson, director of community health education at Edgewater Health. “Edgewater partnering with LCEL allows nearby residents to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables for their families.”

During last year’s Farmers’ Market, visitors enjoyed a variety of fresh options, including homemade goods from Nana’s Tidbits, handcrafted candles and soaps, and locally harvested fresh honey. Blood pressure checks and COVID testing were provided last year and will be performed this year, too.

“Incorporating a healthier lifestyle by eating more fruits and vegetables and increasing physical activity can have a positive impact on your overall health,” said Woodson.

Edgewater Health focuses on whole person care. Healthy eating and good nutrition at any age can have positive effects on the mind and body; Edgewater Health believes in the importance of giving the community an opportunity to purchase fresh produce and baked goods at reduced prices, especially as grocery prices continue to increase.

Everyone in the community is invited to enjoy Edgewater’s Healthy Harvest Farmers’ Market. SNAP/EBT, debit/credit card, and cash are all accepted.
