Rena Dixon, age 33, of East Chicago is in custody and facing a murder charge, the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office announced Monday, in the death of Aaliyah Shewan, age 27, of Aurora, Illinois.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Shewan was a guest in Dixon’s apartment on west 150th Street when she was shot in the stomach by Dixon.

A witness told Lake County homicide investigators that he and Shewan arrived at Dixon’s apartment on Friday night, April 25th.

In the affidavit, “Rena Dixon and Aaliyah Shewan were initially on friendly terms,” the witness said. Their conversation eventually devolved to “shit talking,” but that it overall seemed playful and not violent, serious, or aggressive.

The witness stated, “After approximately twenty minutes, Aaliyah Shewan and Rena Dixon began “tussling.” According to the investigator, the witness explained that they were not physically attacking each other and that it amounted to chest bumping and standing close to each other face-to-face.

The witness told the investigator Rena Dixon then retrieved a firearm that she previously did not have on her person, and he heard a bang and saw Rena Dixon with a handgun.

The witness called 911.

When the homicide investigator arrived on the scene in the early morning hours of Saturday, he found Dixon in her car outside of her apartment.

The prosecutor’s office said Dixon faces additional charges for being a violent felon in possession of a firearm and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. She faces up to 85 years in prison if convicted.

Anyone with further information about Rena Dixon's homicide charge is encouraged to contact Detective Roger Escutia of the Lake County Prosecutor's Homicide Task Force at (219) 755-3855.
