Food Bank of NWI, Delta Sigma Theta, McDonald's, and Dr. Vernon Smith share the bounty for Thanksgiving

Sharing the bounty, from donations of food baskets to gatherings at the table

The Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, the region’s leader in sharing food with those in need has gained multiple partners this Thanksgiving season. State Rep. Vernon Smith is hosting his 28th Harvest Feast and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is presenting its 14th Thanksgiving Dinner. The McDonald’s Restaurant on 169th Street in Hammond has a turkey giveaway.

Strack & Van Til and several of their vendors have partnered with the Food Bank to provide 300 local families in need with Thanksgiving meal assistance. The Mobile Market food distribution will provide individuals and families with food for a complete Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, vegetables, and other side items.

The distributions are open to all Northwest Indiana residents in need of food assistance, and are first-come, first-served until the end of the distribution or all meals have been served. The distribution will be held on Wednesday, November 20th, 4 to 6pm at New Creation Church, 9738 5th Street, Highland.

The next day, Thursday, November 21, the Food Bank is joining with Majestic Star Casino, Jewel-Osco, and Chicago radio stations 101.9 The Mix, The New SHE 100.3 and 97.1 FM The Drive to provide 1,000 local families in need with Thanksgiving meal assistance. The Thanksgiving Community Care-a-Van will provide individuals and families with food for a complete Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey, vegetables, and other side items.

The distributions are open to all Northwest Indiana residents in need of food assistance, and are first-come, first-served until the end of the distribution or all meals have been served.

Distributions will be held at two locations. The first donation will be held from 10am to noon at the Gary YWCA, 150 W. 15th Avenue, Gary.

The second donation will be held from 4pm to 6pm at Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, 6490 Broadway, Merrillville.

State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) will host his 2019 Harvest Feast at 7pm on Friday, November 22, at the Greater Saint Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, 2480 Broadway, Gary.

Hundreds of Gary residents attend the annual dinner each year to celebrate Thanksgiving with a traditional holiday meal and to enjoy live gospel music performances.

“This all started 28 years ago,” said Dr. Smith. “We have seen babies grow into adults, toting along their own babies now.”

“Though it is just once a year, this feast is a celebration of more than just a meal, it celebrates a community of generous, kind-hearted individuals gathering to give thanks,” said Dr. Smith.

It is free and open to the public.

Doris Boulrece, Black McDonald’s Owner/Operator, will host the “Food for the Body & Spirit Turkey Giveaway” at the McDonald’s 3639-169th Street, Hammond, on Saturday, November 23rd, beginning at 8am.

Their mission is to give-back to those in need and help them have a warm and fulfilling Thanksgiving holiday. Hundreds of turkeys will be given on a first come first serve basis. Military veterans will be offered their own courtesy line and a loyalty card good for free coffee through the end of the year.

The Gary Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is rolling out the welcome mat on Thanksgiving Day for its 14th annual Thanksgiving Dinner & Fellowship, 10am to 1pm at New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, 1917 Carolina, Gary.

The sorority will make dinner deliveries available to senior communities, first responder personnel, domestic violence and homeless shelters. To set up delivery, contact GaryAlumnaeDST@gmail.com.
