14-year-old discovered at bottom of pool

The father of Curtis Walton, the 14-year-old football player who drowned in the swimming pool at Calumet High School, has this post on his Facebook page. “This is something we never thought we would ever have to experience, we still give thanks to God for the time and the memories we were able to have with him. We ask that you continue to keep us in prayer as we go forward in the days to come.”

Lake County Sheriff Public Information Liaison Pam Jones said the department is still investigating Walton’s death and is awaiting results of the autopsy from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday, Lake County Sheriff officers responded to a report of a possible drowning at Calumet High School, 3900 Calhoun, in Calumet Township.

When officers arrived, they found Walton unresponsive. Witnesses at the school said the pool was opened to players after football practice. At some point, Walton was discovered at the bottom of the pool.

Lake Ridge Schools Superintendent Sharon Johnson-Shirley said school staff tried CPR and an electronic defibrillator. Walton was taken to Munster’s Community Hospital and later transported to the medical center at the University of Chicago where he died Thursday morning.
