Arrest made in semi-truck driver shooting on I-65

Man from Merrillville turned himself in

The Indiana State Police Lowell Post Criminal Investigation Division has made an arrest in the I-65 interstate shooting that took place on March 28, 2024. Donavon A. Brewer, 32, from Merrillville, IN, turned himself in to detectives on Saturday, March 30th.

Brewer is currently incarcerated at the Jasper County Jail. He has been charged with Attempted Murder, a Level 1 Felony and Criminal Recklessness, a Level 5 Felony.

On the evening of Thursday, March 28 at approximately 4:45pm., ISP troopers responded to I-65 southbound lanes near the 224 mile-marker for an interstate shooting. The location is 6 miles south of the Roselawn/Demotte exit to S.R. 10.

Preliminary investigation shows that a semi-driver was traveling southbound when he sustained a potential life-threatening gunshot wound. Responding troopers immediately rendered first aid until paramedics arrived. A medical transport helicopter was required to lifeline the patient to a hospital in Indianapolis for emergency treatment.

Traffic was closed in both directions for extended amounts of time due to the helicopter being at the scene, and for the detectives and crime scene investigators to complete their investigation. All lanes reopened at 8p.m.

The health status of the victim is unavailable. This is an ongoing investigation. Anyone who may have been in the area and witnessed any suspicious activity prior to the shooting is requested to contact Detective Hamed at 219-696-6242 and leave a message with the Lowell District Post Commander.
