Starts Presidents Day off with free community breakfast

Free community breakfasts, spread across 3 locations, will kick off Black Labor Week in Gary – February 19 - 23.

Organizers have planned five days of activities and events in northwest Indiana and Chicago to spotlight the work of Black labor unions and the labor union movement.

“Our mission is to display the parallels between the Black community and the Labor Movement,” said Ephrin “E.J.” Jenkins, Executive Director of the Black Labor Week Project Inc. Jenkins founded the non-profit organization in 2012.

The week of activities will focus on youth, unemployment, education, mentoring, Black health, community service, leadership development, Black history, veterans, along with social justice issues.

“These initiatives are very significant and critical within the Black community,” Jenkins added. “It helps educate and display the contributions of Black leaders to the Black community that are often unheard or overlooked.”
