Democratic Precinct Captains only take 1 round to name Weatherspoon's replacement

The vacancy in the Office of the Calumet Township Assessor ended Thursday night when the township’s Democratic Precinct Captains selected Jacquelyn Collins to fill the remaining term of Cozey Weatherspoon.

Democratic precinct captains had to decide between 2 candidates, Collins and Saundra Ford. The first and only round went to Collins, 26 to 17.

Both are longtime employees in the assessor’s office. Collins served as Calumet Township Assessor from 2011 until her retirement in 2022. Ford worked under Collins throughout those years. In 2023, Weatherspoon succeeded Collins and appointed Ford as his deputy assessor. The vacancy was caused by Weatherspoon’s sudden passing in January 2024.

Collins will serve out the remaining 3 years of Weatherspoon’s term.
